Language focused Primary School

Educational Project

The Centrality of the Student

School is a place to grow and build a responsible future.

At Saint Denis School we first focus on the pedagogical aspect: the child becomes an active participant in their growth and learning processes through the development of various educational areas (cognitive, creative, socio-affective, psychomotor).

The Centrality of the Family

At School in a Changing Society

The families of Saint Denis School, aware of the complexity of today’s society, with its potentials and related dangers, collaborate with the teachers to find common educational paths.

This harmony helps instill self-responsibility in children regarding rule observance in general, with particular attention to fundamental duties such as respect for oneself and the school community.

Families wishing to join the educational project of the Institute are required to sign the Educational Responsibility Pact, committing to cooperate effectively with the School in achieving the goals set by the Institutional Educational Project and the Three-Year Plan of Educational Offer.

The Centrality of Humanity

At School to Grow as Citizens of the World and the Third Millennium

In the cultural context of the third millennium, Saint Denis School believes it is necessary for children to become adults who:

  • respect themselves, others, nature and the planet
  • cultivate a love for knowledge
  • contribute to the growth of their country in a participatory dimension

Through the Three-Year Educational Offer Plan, Saint Denis School aims to help students achieve the educational goals outlined in the National Guidelines 2012, which are:

  • promoting the harmonious and integral development of the person, their identity, autonomy and citizenship
  • encouraging essential cultural competencies aimed at progressively developing the European key competencies
  • promoting the educational success of all students, with particular attention to their educational needs

Saint Denis School considers dialogue, collaboration, respect, availability and solidarity as the core values of relational dynamics.

Educational Project

The Primary School offers a linguistic educational project (Italian-English-French). In this way, each student gradually acquires, at a level suited to their potential,

the key competencies for active citizenship:

  • communication in the mother tongue
  • communication in foreign languages
  • mathematical, scientific and technological competencies
  • digital skills
  • learning to learn
  • social and civic competencies
  • spirit of initiative and entrepreneurship
  • cultural awareness and expression

The Primary School provides 35 hours of lessons per week, each lasting 60 minutes, including 13-15 hours in English and 1-2 hours in French.

Specifically:

Subjects Taught in Italian
  • Italian
  • Mathematics
  • History
  • Geography
  • Civic education
  • Physical education
  • I.R.C. (Catholic Religious Education)
Subjects Taught in English
  • English
  • Science
  • Digital Literacy
  • Art and Design
  • Music
  • Global Perspectives
  • Story Time (alternative to I.R.C.)
Subjects Taught in French
  • French

Through the study of subjects in Italian, children acquire knowledge, skills and competencies that help them develop a solid foundation and study method, preparing them to approach and succeed in Lower Secondary School.

Through the study and practice of English, children acquire tools to become "global citizens", without forgetting their own language and culture.

How do we teach English at Saint Denis School?

English learning (13-15 hours per week) occurs through:

Teaching the language as a subject
(phonetics, grammar, conversation, studying the customs and traditions of English-speaking countries);
Using the CLIL methodology
(Content and Language Integrated Learning). CLIL is not just about learning a language or a subject, but integrating both. Saint Denis School adapts this methodology to the age group, making each child the "protagonist" of their own learning;
using Cambridge International syllabi and conducting Cambridge Progression Tests during the school year and the Cambridge Checkpoint at the end of the five-year period;
Preparing for prestigious Cambridge certifications
starting with the Starters level and reaching KET level by the end of Primary School.

The textbooks used for English are the ones adopted in British primary schools. In addition to textbooks, children are encouraged to read numerous works of fiction in foreign languages.

English is also practiced during pre-school hours, lunch breaks, after-school care and optional supplementary courses.

French as a Third Language

French is taught for 1 hour per week in first and second grades and 2 hours per week in third, fourth and fifth grades, achieving significant results given the hours dedicated. By the end of Primary School, the students' skills reach level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Enhanced Scientific and Technological Field
In Science (2 hours per week) and Digital Literacy (1 hour per week), engaging laboratory activities are proposed to help students explore the information and communication technologies (ICT) and their functions and potential, as outlined by the Cambridge International syllabi.
Focus on Sports Practice
At Saint Denis School sports practice is emphasized, with the possibility of taking swimming lessons and physical education taught by an experienced instructor during school hours.

Numerous optional extracurricular courses (dance, martial arts, yoga, fencing…) are also offered.

The Methodology

Alongside unified class teaching, significant attention is given to group activities focused on specific educational needs and/or learning levels. This is useful both for addressing gaps and for promoting excellence.
Within the class, the role of the "teacher" is essential, ensuring the unity of teaching across all core subjects, with significant responsibility for the students' learning outcomes. Alongside the "teacher," specialist teachers focus on subjects that require particular expertise (English, French, technology, physical education…). The methodology at Saint Denis School is what we call a "star" system.
